System Lockout/Tagout, also known as LOTO, is an integrated set of procedures and safeguards aimed at ensuring employee safety and protecting property in workplaces where hazardous energy sources are present. This system helps prevent accidents related to hazardous energy, such as electricity, gas, compressed air, or hydraulic energy.

What is the Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) system?

LOTO is a comprehensive system of procedures and safeguards that allows employees to safely shut down and lock out energy sources during maintenance, repair, or other interventions on machines and equipment. It consists of several key elements:

LOTO procedures: precisely defined procedures that explain the steps for shutting down and securing machines and equipment.

Warning signs and labels: clear markings and labels informing about the need for LOTO and identifying energy sources.

LOTO lockouts: special locks and latches that prevent machines or equipment from being started. They can be matched to different types of energy flow.

Safety padlocks: padlocks that serve as employees’ personal safeguards and allow them to maintain control over the device or machine during LOTO work.

Identification tags and labels:  containing information about the LOTO procedure, as well as contact details of employees responsible for the procedure or the lockout.

Why is the Lockout/Tagout system important in occupational health and safety?

  • Employee protection: procedures protect employees from uncontrolled start-up of machines and equipment, which reduces the risk of injuries and accidents.
  • Machine protection: the system prevents damage to machines and equipment by disconnecting their power supply during maintenance work.
  • Minimized downtime: thanks to LOTO, failures and production downtime are minimized, which translates into efficiency and savings

Various types of safeguards are used in the LOTO system, depending on the type of energy and machine configuration. This includes various kinds of lockouts, isolation valves, and safety padlocks.

Safety padlock in the Lockout/Tagout system

A safety padlock is a key element of the LOTO system. It is a safeguard that an employee places on a safeguard/lockout/group lockout box.. This padlock is locked with a key available only to the person responsible for the LOTO procedure. This means that the device cannot be restarted until the padlock is removed by the appropriate person.

Employee safety and maintaining continuity are issues of fundamental importance. Implementing a Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) program can significantly help minimize the risk of accidents and ensure safe work. It is worth knowing the best practices for implementing LOTO, which can be divided into four key stages.

Stage 1: Conducting an audit and defining rules and procedures

The first step in implementing a LOTO program is conducting an audit, which makes it possible to identify all potentially hazardous energy sources. As part of this stage, the rules and procedures related to the LOTO program are also defined.

Stage 2: Identification and marking of energy control points

As part of the second stage of the LOTO program, all energy control points should be located, such as valves, switches, circuit breakers, and fuses. Then they should be clearly marked using labels or tags. Marking is extremely important because employees must be able to clearly identify these points.

Stage 3: Providing lockout and warning tagging tools

In the third stage, it is worth ensuring that employees have access to the appropriate lockout and warning tagging tools. We offer a comprehensive range of LOTO locks and tools, including non-conductive padlocks, brass padlocks, valve lockouts, universal lockouts, fuse lockouts, tags, labels, group lockout boxes, padlock hangers, etc.

Stage 4: Training and dissemination of knowledge

The final stage of the LOTO program is employee training and dissemination of knowledge about the system's procedures and rules.. Our experienced implementation specialists also conduct training for employees and OHS specialists, adapting training plans to different target groups. This is a key element because properly trained personnel are able to effectively apply LOTO procedures.

Implementing the LOTO system in the workplace ensures employee safety and protection of production processes. It is a complex process, but crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring safe work in the workplace.

Rely on the experts, for over a dozen years we have been implementing LOTO systems in the largest manufacturing plants in Poland, training employees and selecting reliable lockout devices, safety padlocks, and tags. Contact us and schedule a free audit at your plant.
