Gas cylinder cabinets not only provide effective protection against hazardous gases, but also play a key role in safeguarding company personnel and property.

What are gas cylinder cabinets?

Gas cylinder cabinets are used for storing cylinders containing industrial gases. Their main purpose is to provide a safe and regulation-compliant place for gas storage.

Why is it worth storing gas cylinders in places designed for them?

Flammable gases  if these gases come into contact with an ignition source, such as a flame or spark, they may cause a fire or explosion in the workplace. Some also have toxic properties which, in the event of a fire or accidental release, may affect nearby personnel. Gases such as LPG may also displace air, which can cause suffocation.

Non-flammable and non-toxic gases may react with other substances, creating a hazard in workplaces where dangerous goods of other classes are present. Some gases are also oxidizing, which means they may cause or contribute to the ignition of other materials. These gases may also cause dilution and displacement of oxygen, resulting in a risk of suffocation or oxygen deficiency.

Toxic gases, such as chlorine or sulfur dioxide, are a type of compressed gas that poses a health risk to people working with them. These substances, used in a variety of applications, from laboratories to refineries, can quickly affect personnel health in the event of an accidental release.

Functions of gas cylinder cabinets

  • isolation of gases from sources of heat and fire,
  • prevention of leaks and gas spread,
  • protection of cylinders against mechanical damage,
  • compliance with safety regulations,
  • restriction of access by unauthorized persons,
  • a place for convenient cylinder storage
  • order and segregation.

Equipment of gas cylinder cabinets

To fulfill their role effectively, gas cylinder cabinets should be equipped with appropriate accessories and features.

Shelves and holders as well as mounting rails

The cabinets should be equipped with racks or shelves that allow the organization of gas cylinders. This helps avoid accidental damage and facilitates access to specific cylinders.

Fan or filter fan in standard or EX/ATEX version.

Ventilation is a key element of gas cylinder cabinets. It ensures adequate airflow, which is important in the event of a gas leak.

Safety systems

Some gas cylinder cabinets are equipped with monitoring and alarm systems that respond to leaks or attempts at unauthorized access. This is an additional layer of protection.

What can they protect against?

Fires and explosions

Industrial gases may be flammable, which poses a serious hazard. Gas cylinder cabinets isolate the gas from sources of heat and fire, minimizing the risk of fires and explosions.

Gas leaks

Leaking gas cylinders can lead to the release of dangerous gases. Cabinets with adequate ventilation help disperse gases outside, preventing poisoning.

Mechanical damage

Gas cylinders are susceptible to mechanical damage. Gas cylinder cabinets protect them from falling or impacts, which can lead to leaks or explosions.

Certificates and standards that gas cylinder cabinets should meet

Gas cylinders are products subject to stringent regulations due to their potential hazard. The most important regulations concerning the storage of gas cylinders are found in the TRGS 510 standard. Below we present the key information contained in TRGS 510 so that you can safely store gas cylinders.

Location and storage:

There is one rule: hazardous substances must not be stored in places where this could pose a danger to employees or other people.

These places include, above all, traffic routes such as staircases, corridors, escape routes, passageways, communication arteries, and narrow courtyards.

On the other hand, places unsuitable for storage include break rooms, duty rooms, sanitary facilities, first aid rooms, or day rooms.

Hazardous substances may be stored in workrooms only if worker protection rules are met and the storage takes place in special equipment adapted to the latest technical standards.

Storage of pressurized gases

Regulations concerning the safe use of gas cylinders are as varied as the fields in which they are used.

Construction requirements and fire protection

Storage rooms intended for storing flammable gases must meet the requirements specified for explosion-hazard rooms.

It should also be remembered that it is necessary to have Fire Safety Instructions, which must be updated at least once every 2 years. In accordance with paragraph 12 of the regulation [Journal of Laws of 2010 No. 109, item 719]:

Storage rooms for cylinders with flammable gases must be protected against overheating to a temperature exceeding 308.15 K (35 degrees C).

Cylinders containing liquefied gas must be located at least 3 meters away from the nearest manholes or other depressions in the ground and openings to rooms located below ground level.

Cylinders intended for the storage and transport of flammable gases must be marked in accordance with Polish Standards.

Cylinders with flammable gases should be stored in rooms dedicated only to this purpose.

How to choose the right cabinet for gas cylinders?

Choosing the right cabinet for gas cylinders can be crucial for the company's safety. Here are a few steps worth taking during the selection:

Determining requirements

First, it is necessary to determine which gases will be stored and how many cylinders will need to be accommodated. This will help determine the size and type of cabinet.

Space and location

The cabinet should be placed in an appropriate location, away from sources of heat and fire. Proper ventilation should also be ensured.

Compliance with regulations

Make sure that the selected cabinet complies with all applicable regulations and has the appropriate certificates.

Market research

A review of available models and manufacturers will help you find the most suitable option in terms of quality and price.

Gas cylinder cabinets are an essential safety element in industry. Properly equipped and regulation-compliant cabinets protect personnel and property from fires, gas leaks, and mechanical damage. When choosing a gas cylinder cabinet, attention should be paid to certificates and compliance with regulations. Taking care of these issues translates into safety and peace of mind in the workplace.
