Case study – storage of hazardous waste – 4 industries and 1 solution
The safe storage of hazardous substances and waste is not just a legal obligation – it is a real challenge faced by many companies across various sectors. A single spill, or a poorly designed or unsuitable storage facility, is enough to expose people, the environment and the company’s reputation to serious harm.
So what do the armed forces, an oil refinery, a paper mill and a logistics company have in common?
All these sectors need a reliable way to store hazardous waste and chemicals safely – although each has different needs and requirements.
What is 4safety’s hazardous waste storage facility, and when is it worth using it?
The hazardous waste storage container from 4safety is a specialised container designed for the safe storage of various types of substances.
It is used wherever there is a need to store materials such as chemicals, flammable substances or toxic waste.
When should you choose it?
- When storage takes place outdoors, e.g. outside the production hall.
- If you want to reduce the amount of red tape involved compared to building a standard warehouse.
- When you want to help protect the environment more easily.
- When minimising the risk of fire is crucial.
- To ensure compliance with Polish and European safety standards.
- To obtain the complete technical and administrative documentation.
- When you value comprehensive support from experts – from consultancy through to implementation.
Thanks to their robust construction and the use of suitable materials, these warehouses ensure:
- Protection against leaks – built-in spill trays prevent substances from seeping into the ground.
- Weather resistance – insulation and ventilation systems protect the contents from extreme temperatures and humidity.
- Fire safety – the use of fire-resistant materials minimises the risk of fire spreading.
- Details that make a difference – e.g. automatic doors, TOSHIBA air conditioning and ergonomic features.
- Tailored to the customer’s individual needs – each structure can be designed to specific requirements.

Hazardous waste storage facility for the armed forces
In the military sector, it is essential to store flammable materials, fuels and chemicals safely. The customer wanted a fire-resistant container with convenient access via a smaller door.
We used:
- TOSHIBA air conditioning - ensures precise temperature control inside the container, protecting the stored substances from overheating or becoming too cold.
- ATEX-compliant ventilation system – ensures the safe extraction of vapours in potentially explosive atmospheres, minimising the risk of explosion.
- Fire-resistant insulation - increases the container’s resistance to high temperatures and slows the spread of fire, providing additional safety in the event of a fire.
- Access control – security measures to prevent unauthorised entry
Storage of hazardous substances at a refinery
Refineries handle materials that pose a high fire risk. The refinery’s warehouse contained:
- Specialised ATEX IP66 enclosure – protects electrical installations in potentially explosive atmospheres, ensuring watertightness, resistance to dust and moisture, and safe operation.
- Gas detection system with audible alarm – detects hazardous gas concentrations and alerts staff, minimising the risk of an explosion or poisoning.
- A structure measuring 4 by 6 metres.
- Automatic fire-extinguishing system – automatically detects a fire hazard and instantly activates the extinguishing process.
A magazine for the paper industry
Paper mills use a number of hazardous chemicals – for bleaching, sizing, dyeing and impregnating paper.
The following were used in the warehouse:
- Chemical-resistant materials – protect the structure from aggressive substances, ensuring long-term durability.
- Fibreglass trusses – ensure durability and resistance to corrosion and chemicals.
- High structural airtightness.
- An effective ventilation system – ensures constant air circulation, reduces the concentration of harmful vapours and maintains safe conditions inside the container.
Fire-resistant battery storage facility – for logistics and more

The solution includes:
- Fire resistance rating REI 120 – a structure meeting the highest fire safety standards.
- Automatic fire door, EI120 min class – a rapid-closing system designed to limit the spread of fire.
- Detection and ventilation system – gas and smoke detectors and effective ventilation to improve safety.
The benefits of investing in a waste and hazardous substances storage facility from 4safety
Investing in a professional warehouse for hazardous substances is an investment in safety! It must be well thought out and precisely tailored to the realities of your industry.
Why should you work with us?
- We design containers with operating conditions in mind – for example, access for forklift trucks, interior ergonomics and resistance to outdoor conditions.
- We use only the very best materials – galvanised steel, fire-resistant panels and non-slip platforms.
- We offer comprehensive consultancy services – audits, risk analysis and selection of the best solution.
- We supply the warehouses as plug-and-play solutions – fully equipped with a spill tray, ventilation, lighting, sensors and safety features.
- You save time – everything you need for safe storage is in one place.

According to the expert:
“I often come across the attitude: why pay over the odds? Let’s just go for a standard metal-clad building…”
I have seen on more than one occasion how chemicals were stored in thin-walled metal drums, which after a few seasons began to resemble a sieve – you could peer inside through a gap and see the drums containing hazardous substances. A supposed cost-saving measure? It may be cheaper at first, but if something goes wrong, the costs are incalculable – whether financial, environmental or reputational.
That is why, if you are going to invest, you should invest in high-quality solutions designed with long-term safety in mind. At 4safety, we focus on Polish manufacturing, which we oversee at every stage. Our containers are not produced in a week – behind each one lies experience, expertise and a genuine understanding of the customer’s needs.
“They’re already in use all over Poland – in the armed forces, at refineries, in manufacturing plants and at logistics companies. And they’re there not because they were the cheapest – but simply because they’re the best fit and genuinely safe.”
