Flexible barriers in the food industry. How did we secure ice cream production at Froneri?
Low temperatures, heavy forklift traffic, cold storage areas, strict hygiene standards and 24/7 production continuity call for safety measures that provide genuine protection – rather than creating further problems.
That is precisely why the global ice-cream manufacturing giant has opted for the flexible barriers implemented by 4safety.

Everyday life in a supermarket: a fast pace, the highest standards of hygiene and the illusion of impenetrable security...
Let’s be honest: it’s not easy in the food industry. The production hall is a bustling, fast-paced environment. Pallets, forklift traffic, time pressure and the constant struggle to maximise line efficiency. Yet, amidst this intralogistics chaos, there is one ‘but’ that determines the very survival of the entire plant: absolute hygiene standards. It’s not just about being clean here – it has to be 100% hygienic, with absolutely no room for even the slightest slip-up.
In such a demanding environment, protecting critical infrastructure – such as process machinery, control cabinets and refrigeration panels – is an absolute priority. Unfortunately, many plants are still labouring under the dangerous illusion that traditional steel barriers are sufficient for this task.
See the CASE STUDY reports on the installation of barriers!
How did it go? Steel-wise ;) Traditional steel security measures posed enormous risks in this environment:
- Risk of product contamination: contact with steel causes the formation of metal filings, dust and flaking paint, which directly jeopardises the microbiological and physical purity of the ice cream.
- Damage to infrastructure: during a collision, steel crash barriers pull out the anchors along with the concrete (anchor pull-out), which damages the floor, generates dust and requires costly, ‘messy’ structural repairs that interrupt production.
- Thermal risk: any damage to the walls of cold stores or freezer doors caused by a forklift truck risks compromising the seal, leading to temperature fluctuations and, as a result, the deterioration or complete destruction of the stored products.
That is why we opted for flexible and hygienic protection. Following a site visit and a detailed discussion of the daily challenges faced by the client’s team, we carefully matched specific types of barriers to the locations and risk levels:
- For cold storage areas – specialised profiles designed to withstand low temperatures.
- For forklift entry and exit points – the strongest posts and bumpers, which effectively protect gates and walls.
- For confined spaces – compact and modular safety devices.
All this is finished to a high standard, fully meeting the strict standards of this demanding industry. And here’s the result we were aiming for!

Refrigerated and frozen storage areas
In low-temperature areas, barriers made of a technopolymer capable of withstanding even extreme refrigeration conditions have been installed.
The material retains:
- flexibility,
- energy consumption,
- resistance to cracking,
- full functionality even at very low temperatures.
Hygiene and production zones
Food production requires solutions that are easy to keep clean.
Therefore, the following was used:
- non-porous material,
- surfaces that are easy to clean,
- concealed fixings,
- stainless steel fittings, solutions designed to minimise the build-up of dirt and moisture.
The barriers are resistant to:
- water,
- moisture,
- cleaning products,
- alcohols,
- salt solutions,
- chemicals used in disinfection.
Importantly, the material does not corrode and does not cause mould to form.

Protecting critical infrastructure in the food industry does not have to mean a trade-off between hygiene standards and mechanical durability. The installation of MPM’s flexible barriers proves that it is possible to eliminate the problem of floor damage, paint chipping and corrosion, whilst achieving maximum peace of mind during quality audits and real savings in the maintenance budget.
By tailoring our systems precisely to the specific requirements of freezers, cold stores and logistics corridors, your facility gains protection that genuinely helps ensure the continuity and smooth running of production.
See our client’s testimonial – Froneri – thank you for your trust :)
Don’t buy ‘off-the-shelf’ security solutions without proper consideration. Every production hall has its own specific characteristics, different levels of traffic and distinct critical points. Opt for professional technical advice and a free on-site assessment by our experts.
